Purpose of Statement
Nowadays, “Data science” can be developing a very popular conception. It is an interdisciplinary field about processes and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms, which is a continuation of some of the data analysis fields such as statistics, data mining, and predictive analytics. As a software engineering student, I know the importance and needs of data technology in today’s world. What is more, I am deeply fascinated by the rich connotations combined with mathematics and programming. The desire to build a bridge between human wisdom and computer triggers me to pursue data science as my lifelong pursuit.
As an undergraduate student who majored in software engineering, I made B+ on most courses. I’ve formed a solid knowledge base for specialized study. From traditional courses including web program Design, Algorithm and data structure, database Principles and Design and so on, In the first two years, I didn’t spend much time on preparing for exams, so I guess that’s why the scores on my transcript may not be perfect, but I did pay a lot of attention to putting textbook knowledge into practical use. In the first two years, I was busy participating in a variety of academic projects. As you can see from my resume, I joined in several application development projects. These experiences not only strengthened my theoretical knowledge, but enhanced my problems-solving ability, communication skill and time management. Also, I got pleasure and fulfillment from my work.
Having tasting the sweetness to turn my ideas into reality, I have been seeking for more opportunities to practice. In my senior year, I was lucky to intern in Pacteria Technology Ltd., one of the largest IT companies in China. There I got exposed to Oracle Database and PL-SQL, Oracle reporting system, which give me a better foundational knowledge of data mining. During the internship, I was assigned the project of Bank Financial System. It was a successful teamwork due to our group member excellent performance. With this project, it provided me an all-encompassing view of the knowledge of big data and system analysis. For example, the application program interface system that we have chosen data for reflecting reporting charts. At first, I was unconfident in finishing the work of preparing the analysis module of data visualization, since I didn’t have any practical experience in data processing in a corporation, but with the help of my team member, I read a lot of R materials and Hadoop data reviewing, as well, I got to understand the meaning of the company’s own framework which could give a platform for data reflection, and eventually realized how to combination with R data visualization and Hadoop into a same platform. The director praised me a lot that I am good at brainstorming. Then I appointed as intern software developer and data analyst. This new position put forward higher requirements for my expertise and capability. It was challenging but rewarding because it made me a good sense of big data and analysis, which helps me to deepen the understanding from various angles for Data Analytic Engineering.
As gaining the knowledge and experience in the field of data processing and programming, I begin to take a large interest in the field of data analysis. Therefore, my plan goes like this: after completing my graduate study, I hope to narrow my research down to data mining. With the great resources and opportunities that the US can offer, I will delve into this concentration, exposing myself to the latest theories as well as applications of this technology. Especially, I would like to use data mining techniques for the medical and health applications, such as cancer prediction and prognosis, which is my perspective for the future career. Then after earn a doctor’s degree, I will go back to my motherland to apply the knowledge I’ve learned to the reality in China. I believe I can contribute to the development of e-business development there. For the goal I set for myself, I have prepared myself in academic aspect and personal competence.
